Eleven Design Choices That Make a Home Feel More Elevated

Taller doors, better furniture placement and smarter storage. Small decisions that make a big difference to how a home looks and works.
A home that feels polished is rarely about expensive furniture. More often it comes down to scale, placement, materials and how well things are put away.
1. Choose taller doors
Standard 80-inch doors can look stubby in rooms with high ceilings. Taller doors draw the eye up. For a smaller update, paint doors the same color as the walls.
2. Add a sunroom
A light-filled room between inside and out can serve as a breakfast nook, office or reading spot. Good glazing and shades make it usable year-round.

3. Pull furniture off the walls
Pushing every piece against the walls leaves a room feeling like a waiting area. Float the sofa, angle the chairs toward each other and anchor the group with a rug. Even a few inches of space behind the sofa helps.
4. Plan the bathroom around reach
Put towels within arm's reach of the shower and toilet paper where it is easy to reach while seated. A simple hook can replace a bulky towel bar.
5. Think twice about huge tiles
Very large tiles can look cold in small rooms and need perfectly flat floors. Mid-size or handmade tiles often feel warmer.
6. Skip glass dining tables
Glass tables show every smudge and feel less inviting than wood or stone.
7. Avoid hollow and flimsy pieces
Solid-core doors and well-built furniture feel better to use and last longer.
8. Don't buy matching seasonal sets
A few natural elements, like branches, gourds or greenery, look more personal than a coordinated store set.
9. Prioritize concealed storage
Closed cabinets and baskets keep surfaces calm. Display only what you love.
10. Choose one statement plant
One large plant makes more impact than many small pots scattered around.
11. Hide kitchen clutter
Appliance garages, pull-out pantries and integrated panels keep counters clear and make a kitchen look calmer.
